UPDATE: Senate votes 35-1 for passage of House Bill 1 on Friday morning. As expected, a few minutes after the Senate adjourned, the House also passed the bill in record time.
The bottom line seems to be there isn’t enough money in the retirement system to keep going as it is going. Since current employees by law cannot have their retirement benefits lessened, new employees will get fewer pension dollars, smaller increases based on inflation and will have to contribute more to their insurance.

We take a brief, confused look at HB 1 by comparing it to HB 600, a similar bill from the 2008 Regular Session.

Kentucky's Jobless Rate Increases

FRANKFORT, Ky.  — Kentucky’s seasonally adjusted preliminary unemployment rate for May 2008 rose to 6.2 percent from April 2008’s revised 5.6 percent, according to the Office of Employment and Training (OET), an agency of the Kentucky Education Cabinet. May 2007’s jobless rate was 5.6 percent.
