INTRODUCTION - DEBATE DEMOCRAT STYLE
 
It is fitting that the last Democratic debate took place in Paducah Thursday evening. It will be polling booths closing an hour after the eastern end of the state that will bring the curtain down on four of the candidates. 

Bill Bartleman of the Paducah Sun served as moderator. It was no secret he wasn't the Dems first choice. The Paducah Sun has been less than kind to Democrats in recent years. The event, held in the Julian Carroll Civic Center, was advertised as a “town hall meeting.” It was anything but.

QUESTION: Would you have voted for the health care bill? What do you like and don’t like about the recently passed health care bill?

Price: It’s a step in the right direction. We pay more for health care and get less than other countries because of “evil bloodsucking monopolizing vampire insurance companies”. She blames cronyism between Capitol Hill and Congress. She wants the anti-trust exemption for Many members (of Congress) are bought off.

 Mongiardo: What happened in Arizona was the result of frustration that the federal government is not doing its job. We need to shut down the borders and make sure that those who hire illegals are held accountable. They wouldn’t be coming if they didn’t have a job to come to.

Question: What alternative do you favor to cap and trade to protect the environment?
 
Conway: Opposes cap and trade. He will judge legislation on four criteria:
1. Does it protect Kentucky coal?
2. Does it protect the strategic advantage when it comes to lower electricity rates/?
3. Are we making certain brokers and traders not profiting under this system?
4. Are China and India playing by the same rules as America?
 Invest in clean coal technology, carbon recapture, building refitting.

Buckmaster: I think if the nuclear industry thinks it is sustainable, then they should finance it. We need to stop having our government support everything. We need to support Kentucky coal any way we can.

Sweeney: whatever happens, I would suggest the first thing the federal government needs to do is come down here and listen to the people of Paducah. In Louisville, when military plants closed or threatened to close, we figured out new ways to use that plant.
