Hickman Co. Elementary Students celebrate I Love to Read Week

UPDATE: Students met the reading challenge and Principal Johnson kissed a pig on Friday to celebrate.

Librarian Tammy Taylor has planned activities ranging from a St. Valentine’s Day Box decorating contest to a Book Bowl – an academic team style trivia contest based on literature, a book swap and a parade of students and teachers dressed in character.

The cafeteria will offer special literature based lunches during I Love to Read Week. “Stone Soup” will be on the menu.

Graves High student-vocalists perform in KMEA All-State Women’s Choir
Graves County High School Choir juniors Megan Durham and Emily Duff and sophomore Hannah Latta participated in the Kentucky Music Educators' Association’s 180-member All-State Women's Choir in Louisville in mid-February. Their performance took place at the Kentucky Center for the Arts under the direction of Dr. Z. Randall Stroope, an internationally-recognized composer, conductor, and teacher from Oklahoma.

PTHS Freshman Oatman wins at Region 1 Swim Meet
Paducah Tilghman freshman Logan Oatman was crowned Region 1 Champion in the 100 backstroke with his first place finish of 54.73 and placed third in the 100 Butterfly at the Region 1 Swim Meet held in Owensboro Saturday.

Harris lecture and spirituals kick off Civil War Anniversary Year
Dressed in colorful African dashikis, the women of Green Valley Baptist Church and Work in Progress, poured hearts, souls and voices into traditional Negro spirituals last Saturday evening at the Young Center in Clinton. 

Their performance began the first event of a year long observance of the 200th anniversary of the Civil War.  Grants obtained by Alma Blair, Hickman County’s Librarian brought assistant professor of dance and theater Daryl Harris to Clinton.

The future looks bleak for the Hickman County Detention Center.

Jailer Chad Frizzell reported a total of 39 state prisoners. "That's low, low, way down," he said. It's a problem county jails are facing across the state due to the state's early release program.

"Fifteen years ago they wanted us to build bigger jails to handle inmates' overcrowding," Frizzell said. "Now they've cut the number of inmates and left us hanging."
