McConnell opposed coal plant while judge exec.

A paper in far eastern Kentucky is reporting that Senator Mitch McConnell, a staunch supporter of coal, opposed locating a coal plant in Louisville when he was Jefferson County Judge Executive back in 1984.

There is a Paducah connection to this story. Convenient Energy Inc. of Paducah was the developer. And they weren't happy with Judge McConnell.

According to the Hazard story - "The Courier-Journal reported in August 1984, that McConnell may just be opposing the plant for political gain.

"'Mitch is jumping on the political bandwagon,' said Gene Smith, a consultant on the project for its developers, Convenient Energy Inc. of Paducah. 'This little coal plant has become the focus of attention, and McConnell is hoping to capitalize on that.'"
