West Kentucky Veteran Center reaches out to earthquake victims
Veterans Center Staff Donates Cash, Supplies
to Help Victims of Haiti Earthquake

Hanson facility has raised more than $1,000

(HANSON, Feb. 19, 2010) Twelve years ago, Linnell Sorrells worked in Haiti as part of a charitable mission.  The experience of helping to provide good, clothing, health care, schooling and spiritual support to people in Grand Goave, 45 miles west of Port-au-Prince, deeply moved her.
So when she heard the news of the January 12 earthquake, the administrative specialist at Western Kentucky Veterans Center knew she had to help.
“Two days after the quake,” Sorrells says, “I explained my connection to Haiti to my administrator, Lori Hardwick-Hill. I asked if I could post a statement near the time clock explaining to my coworkers that if they would like information on how they could help with the disaster relief, to please talk with me.
“The first coworker that came to my office wrote a check to the mission for $250 and from that point my coworkers have continued to give. To date, they have donated $1,000 to the mission plus various medical supplies, food, clothing, and seven cases of water.”
WKVC also provided walkers, crutches and canes that were available for a nonprofit group.
“I can only imagine the joy and gratitude that will be evident when those new amputees receive the means to once again be mobile,” Sorrells said.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to remind my friends at WKVC that through our abundance in the United States, we can meet the needs of the Haitian people.  Western KY Veterans Center has truly stepped up and met that challenge.”
