Remember the War? It was in all the newspapers!
Remember the War? It was in all the newspapers!

America is at war, a forever war. The nation has stepped over a new line in the sand. We are now past 5 years of war and counting. This is longer than World War II.

President Bush has called for a renewed sense of our struggle in the Middle East. In his words we must continue the course of war until the mission has been accomplished. Yet, each time he speaks to the nation about staying the course, critics point out the cost in terms of human sacrifice and draining our way of life at home.

Now, 4,032 Americans have paid the highest price with their lives for our invasion and occupation of Iraq.

Beyond the human cost is now growing the devastating cost of the war on the American economy. Harry Ried, D-Nevada, President of the Senate recently stated that the war “was costing $ 5,000 dollars a second.”

Other critics have estimated that the overall cost of Bush’s war is at 3 trillion dollars. this figure includes not only the direct cost of weapons, soldiers , and the normal operations of fighting a war across the planet from America, but also the cost at home.

The immediate cost of hospital care of returning wounded veterans and the long term cost of keeping these vets in the medical recovery system for the next 20-30 years has established a “Iraq veteran medical time bomb” within the American society of the 21s century.

History will no doubt show that our war in Iraq will be one of the major reasons that oil prices go to $125-$150 a barrel in 2008. On Tuesday, April 8, 2008, the price of one barrel of crude oil top $112. In less than 30 days, oil has gone from $ 90 to $ 112. This is roughly 25% increase.

Wall Street market traders are speculating that by Memorial Day, oil will be at $ 140 per barrel, another 25 % increase.

The next president must find a way out of this “tar baby in the sand box” war. He or she will have to work hard, at the same time, trying to make sure America does not economically collapse in massive depression.

The next president has one hope, the will of the people.
America will be saved once the people wake up and demand a common sense approach to solving America’s mega problems.

Nor will big oil or global corporations be able to stand up to an united American spirit for doing the right thing with public policy.

Let’s pray it is not too late
