Mayfield Adopts Ft. Campbell Blackhorse Troop for Another Tour

January 3, 2013 (Mayfield, KY).  The City of Mayfield announced today its re-adoption of the soldiers and families in Blackhorse Troop, I-32 CAV, out of Fort Campbell, Kentucky.  The City has had an ongoing relationship with this troop since 2005.  At that time, the troops were adopted by the City through a special program called Americans Supporting Americans (ASA).  Because of the good assistance provided by the citizens of Mayfield, each time this troop has deployed, they have asked for the City’s continued support.

“I have maintained contact with this troop through the years, and they have even come for a visit a couple of times, once even presenting the city with a beautiful collectible sword, which is displayed in shadowbox in the Mayor’s Conference Room,” commented Teresa Cantrell.  She continued that when they contacted her late last year, she jumped at the chance to help again.  “From past experience, I know that the citizens of Mayfield are generous when it comes to these soldiers and their needs,” said Cantrell.  The Blackhorse Troop was recently deployed to Iraq, where they will be for several months.

Throughout the month of January, Mayor Cantrell will be collecting items for the troop in her office.  “We’d like to focus on things we can send them for Valentine’s Day.  Cards, hard candy, gum, books, magazines for men, and other items are welcome for this first mailing,” commented Cantrell.  In the past, toiletries have been collected, but Cantrell says that the troops say those are in good supply for them at this point.  “So we’re just going to focus on sending them some ‘extras’ from home…from the people of Mayfield, Kentucky.”

Anyone wishing to donate for the troops should drop off their items at the Mayor’s office anytime Monday through Friday, 8am-4:30pm through Friday, January 25.  The items will be packaged and shipped in order to arrive in time for Valentine’s Day.  Any questions can be directed to Mayor Cantrell at 251-6251.
