Challenger Learning Center offers 2017 youth summer camps

Challenger Learning Center Summer Camps

Paducah, Kentucky (February 13, 2017) - The Challenger Learning Center (CLC) at Paducah will be offering a variety of summer camps with learning fun for kids of all ages. Early registration is encouraged as camps fill up fast. Preregistration is required.

Each camp is designed for students who will be entering kindergarten through 16 years old in August 2017. Camps will be held at the CLC on the campus of West Kentucky Community and Technical College and at various off-location settings.

The following Astrotot camps are for rising kindergartners through first graders and are two-hour sessions held from 9 - 11 a.m. or 12:30 - 2:30 p.m. The cost of each Astrotot camp is $18.

Astrotots: Cosmic Constellations - June 2

What are those pictures in the sky? Astrotots will learn about constellations while gazing at the stars in our star dome. They will get to make and name their very own constellation.

Astrotots: Mighty Magnets - June 16

What do magnets stick to? Using different kinds of magnets and objects, Astrotots will learn how magnets work. They will also make two space magnets to take home.

Astrotots: Rockin' Rockets - June 30

Become a rocketeer! Astrotots will learn all about rockets and see a "live" launch in our mission control. They will build and launch a straw rocket and launch stomp rockets.

Astrotots: Living in Space - July 14

Living and working in space is very different than on earth! Tots will experience how an astronaut adapts to the unique environment of space. Activities include working in gloveboxes and eating space food.

Explore: Space - June 8 and 22; July 10, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Age: Rising 2nd-3rd grade

Cost: $30; $35 with lunch

This one-day camp, formerly Space Discovery I, includes many hands-on space and science activities centered around the planets and includes a visit to space in our simulator.

Explore: Stars - June 9 and 23; July 11, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Age: Rising 2nd-3rd grade

Cost: $30; $35 with lunch

This one-day camp, formerly Space Discovery II, includes many hands-on space and science activities centered around stars and constellations and includes a visit to our STARLAB.

Expedition: Eclipse - July 11, 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Age: Rising 3rd - 5th grade

Cost: $30; $35 with lunch

Once in a lifetime camp! A unique event will happen in our area on August 21, 2017 - a total solar eclipse! This camp will give you everything you need to know about the science behind the eclipse and how to view it.

Expedition: Comet - June 22, 8:30a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Age: Rising 4th - 7th grade

Cost: $40; $45 with lunch

Be a space explorer in search of a comet! Campers will Rendezvous with a Comet™ as they fly a mission in our hands-on simulator. They will work onboard the Space Station to find out just what it takes to study one of the most beautiful objects in space.

Expedition: Moon - July 20, 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Age: Rising 4th - 7th grade

Cost: $40; $45 with lunch

Be among the next generation of space travelers to arrive on the Moon! Campers will Return to the Moon™ as they fly a mission in our hands-on simulator. They will explore just what it takes for astronauts to survive in the Moon's desolate environment.

Spy Camp - June 15-16, 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Age: Rising 3rd - 5th grade

Cost: $90, $100 with lunch

At secret agent training, you will develop a disguise for cover, make and break codes, discover escape and evasion techniques, create and use spy gadgets and uncover the science behind spying.

CSI Camp - June 13 - 14, 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Age: Rising 5th - 8th grade

Cost: $90; $100 with lunch

Become a Challenger Special Investigator. Read the ransom note and follow the fingerprints, fibers and other clues. Students will use their powers of observation and conduct scientific tests to help solve the mystery of the missing Mars rocks.

Rocket Camp - July 12 - 13, 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Age: Rising 5th - 8th grade

Cost: $90; $100 with lunch

After learning about the basics of rocketry, participants will build and launch several different types of rockets including eggstronaut rockets and model rockets.

Mission to Mars - June 26 - 28, 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Age: Rising 4th - 7th grade

Cost: $130; $145 with lunch

Be the first human on Mars! Campers will travel to the Red Planet during a Voyage to Mars™ mission in our hands-on simulator during this three-day camp. After arriving on Mars, students will build a life-size colony where they will live, work and train like real planetary astronauts.

Underwater Astronaut Camp - June 19 - 21, 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Age: 11 - 14 years old

Cost: $170; $185 with lunch

Learn how astronauts train underwater to simulate working in space! Participants will receive basic scuba instruction (in a swimming pool) from Mermet Springs, and then participate in an underwater astronaut training program. Participants must be able to swim and medically fit to dive. Scuba gear is provided. Mandatory meeting held on May 1.

Aviation Camp - July 17 - 19, 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Age: 13 - 16 years old

Cost: $195; $210 with lunch

What makes an airplane fly? Learn the basics of flight and apply them in different hands-on activities and simulations. After students have shown the right stuff, they will take a flight in a real airplane departing from Midwest Aviation. While in the air, participants become an actual pilot when they take the yoke and fly the plane.
