April 17, 2012 (Mayfield, KY) The crowd was a little lighter than last month, but the results and the participation from the Community Design Charrette meeting were, in her words, “simply outstanding.” The meeting was held in conjunction with Mayor Cantrell’s work with staff from the Kentucky League of Cities for the purpose of strategic planning for the City of Mayfield.
In his opening comments, Tad Long, Community Development Advisor with KLC explained that the term "charrette" is derived from the French word for "little cart." In Paris during the 19th century, professors at the Ecole de Beaux Arts circulated with little carts to collect final drawings from their students. Students would jump on the "charrette" to put finishing touches on their presentation minutes before the deadline.
In city development, the charrette is an intensive planning session where citizens, designers and others collaborate on a vision for the community’s future development. It provides a forum for ideas and offers the unique advantage of immediate feedback to planners and city leaders. More importantly, it allows everyone who participates to be a mutual author of the plan.
Last night’s collaborative efforts came from seven different teams, composed of four to six people each. Groups were given time limits to work on their individual maps of the city of Mayfield, adding amenities and their own unique vision of what they would like to see Mayfield work toward becoming.
The results of the Design Charrette will be on display at City Hall on Monday, May 14, 2012, at 5:30pm, just prior to the May City Council meeting. Additionally, Tad Long, along with Bobbie Bryant, Community Development Advisor with KLC, will address the City Council with updates on the progress of the Strategic Planning Process for the City of Mayfield.
