Corn bin explosion spills mountain of corn closing highway

Twisted remains of a semi trailer lie in tons of corn.

(Clinton, KY January 12, 2013) – The rain came down in sheets for over two hours. In that time, Hickman County received three inches of rain. During the afternoon storm, one of the most recognizable agricultural landmarks blew apart. 

Half a mile past Greg’s Supermarket and the Clinton city limits, on the major north south highway, over one half million bushels of corn spewed out of the twisted metal that was once Burgess Brothers’  newest storage bin. Emergency vehicles on the scene of 100 foot corn bin rupture

Corn in the bin would fill 575 semi trailer loads of shelled corn from last season. Market value of the spilled crop is estimated at between six and eight million dollars.

There wCleaning up the mess of 1/2 million bushels of cornere no injuries when the structure blew apart. However, a driver of one of the rigs escaped from his cab as a wall of corn engulfed his truck. The trailer was destroyed and the cab turned over.

Kentucky Highway 51 South was closed by the overflow. Crews quickly arrived on the scene and front loaders put to work clearing the highway.

No cause for the accident has been determined at this time.
