Old Hymn Sing - community sharing old time music | Heritage Days 2017, Hickman County Historical Society, Old Hymn Sing, music,

(Clinton KY)- Since Heritage Days began in 2015, one of the most beloved events is the Old Hymn Sing (OHS). Held in the historic Clinton First Christian Church for the first two years, the event moved to Clinton First Methodist Church in 2017. The program will take place Friday, September 8th as part of Heritage Days in Hickman County.

OHS is a combined program of individual singers and groups and congregational singing. Sharing their talents will be singers ranging from the young to the very senior citizens. The Old Hymn Sing is unique in the choices of hymns written before 1950. To be historically accurate, singers don't use electric instruments or recorded accompaniment. Several will be playing guitars or piano. Others will sing a cappella.

Returning to the Old Hymn Sing will be Helen Greer, Charles and Denise Berryhill, Baker Thompson, Lori Burgess and Sarah Bowman, the First Baptist Praise Team, the Cokesbury Singers and Denise McWhorter playing the psaltery.

New singers this year are Maddie Pittman, Henry Brazzell, Will Triplett and Shelly Lickliter.

The move to First Methodist gave organizers a chance to invite two talented musicians, Sharon Cagle and Janie Templeton, to duet on the organ and grand piano before the singing begins. Cagle and Templeton will begin playing at 6:30.

Another change this year is the event is sponsored by the Hickman County Ministerial Alliance. The hymn sing is free, but donations will be accepted to support the work of the Alliance. The Ministerial Alliance helps those in need of assistance after emergencies and the Mission House which runs the food bank and clothing room.

Congregational music is already printed into songbooks. The Church in the Wildwood, I Saw the Light and Nearer My God to Thee are just three of the hymns to be sung by all. Participants from past years have enjoyed harmonizing and singing parts on the "all sing" hymns.
