Hickman County High celebrates I Love to Read Week

Avid reader, Alyssa Moore, was the winner of the Most AR books tested during the week.

With February being Library Lovers' Month and March 2 being Dr. Seuss's Birthday and Read Across America Day, Hickman County High School recently participated in I Love to Read Week with several fun activities designed to celebrate and promote reading. Middle School Social Studies teacher, Sean Seavers, dressed as Cat in the Hat in honor of Dr. Seuss's birthday on Friday.

Throughout the week, students observed DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) time. In addition, students were encouraged to take Accelerated Reading tests over the books they were reading. Shown at left, winners of the Famous Quote door prize drawing are Emily Pickard and Elijah Bruer.

For each test passed, student names were entered into a prize drawing for a new 8-inch Kindle Fire and a $50 Kindle gift card. Also, each day, a famous literary quote from a well-known work of literature was read over the P.A. Students were encouraged to submit entries identifying the title of the work in which the quote is found along with the name of its author.

In another activity, students who were "caught" reading for pleasure at random times had their photos posted on a bulletin board. Finally, throughout the week, students earned Hershey's kisses for each overdue book checked in and each new book checked out.
