Fallen Blossoms and the Ghosts of Crowley Corner
Fallen Blossoms and the Ghosts of Crowley Corner
Rushing against a fast approaching deadline for the paper, I pull the car into a tight curve and swing around, stopping just short of the Highway 2208 sign at Crowley Corner. To most travelers along Highway 58 going into Clinton or headed the other way to Mayfield, this small intersection holds nothing special.
However, for some of us mortals, there are special memories that surface each time we drive through this part of Hickman County.

Dems Close to Bulletproof Majority
Yowsa!
MSNBC.com is reporting that Senator Arlen Specter is talking with Democrats about switching from GOP to Dem. If that happens and Al Franken is confirmed in the race in Minnesota, the Dems will have a filibuster proof 60 vote majority.

Here's the question for you Kentucky political junkies:
If the Dems in the Senate get a filibuster proof majority, what will that do to Sen. Bunning's fund raising efforts? Will the GOP galvanize behind him to help him keep his seat?
Will they toss him off the row boat and get a younger candidate?

MLA and Baylor student paper oppose KCTCS board vote to axe tenure
...In March, the KCTCS board eliminated tenure for faculty hired on or after July 1. Few, if any, teachers doubt that Dr. Michael McCall, the KCTCS president, supported, if not encouraged, the board action.
"KCTCS faculty will continue to have the same rights and privileges afforded to faculty in other higher education institutions through existing organizational policies regarding academic freedom, promotion, shared governance and due process,” said Board Chair Richard Bean in a KCTCS news release...

Ringo tells students:
Ringo tells students: "We have not created a great place for you."
Jerome Ringo spoke to a hall almost full of young people. Middle and high school students made up the great majority of the audience at Murray State’s Earth Day’s key note speech. A scattering of college students, a few elected officials and some diehard environmental activists lent some age to the crowd.
Ringo tailored his speech to his audience. He apologized to the students for the mess that his and preceding generations had made of the environment.

Funding Formula Disadvantages Rural School Districts
Daily Yonder hits the nail on the head once again with a report by Caitlin Howley on how rural school districts may not get the same advantage from President Obama’s stimulus funding because of a twist in existing law. Howley writes:
“The new federal stimulus spending bill -- officially, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) -- provides an unprecedented, one-time infusion of education funding for states and schools. Over $100 billion, $44 billion of which is now available, will be distributed by the U.S. Department of Education through a variety of existing and new programs. However, small rural districts may not benefit from this opportunity as much as their larger, urban counterparts —even if the rural districts serve needier student populations…”

Unemployment State by State
Stateline.org  has an indepth story of unemployment state by state with a nifty click on to see state by state stats. One excerpt from the story:
"In March, the unemployment rate moved to 8.5 percent nationally, compared to 4.9 percent in December 2007 when the recession began. By the end of this year, the rate is expected to reach 9.5 percent, still shy of the nation’s post World War II peak of 10.8 percent in November and December 1982.
Currently, more than four unemployed workers are available for every job opening and nearly one-quarter of jobless workers have been unemployed for six months or longer, according to the Economic Policy Institute, a research group that supports low- and middle-income workers. Since the start of the recession, new job creation has declined by more than 30 percent, reflecting companies’ reluctance to hire new workers or replace those who leave..."

Guest Editorial: HEALTH CARE IS A HUMAN RIGHT!
A detailed and comprehensive health care bill has been RE-INTRODUCED into Congress that would allow everyone access to a doctor or hospital of their choice when needed and without any payment; that bill is HR 676, National Single-payer Health Care.  Healthcare is a right for everyone in the USA and the time has come that it actually can be, IF HR 676 is passed into law.  HR 676 would be publicly funded, similar to Medicare.  HR 676 would cover all necessary care including dental, vision, doctor, hospital, nursing home, mental health, home health, hearing aids, prescription drugs, etc.
