Maersk Crew credit union membership as a reason for beating pirates

The American crew members of the Maersk Alabama - a ship recently hijacked by Somali pirates - fought back and won.  They specifically cited their union membership as a reason for how they were able to beat the pirates.
In an interview with NBC, the ship's Third Engineer, John Cronan, said this about their efforts:
"We are American seamen.  We are union members.  We stuck together, we did our jobs.  And that's how we did it."

Oops. State Misses Out on Fed Unemployment Extended Benefits
Oops. State Misses Out on Fed Unemployment Extended Benefits
UPDATE: The Obama Administration took pity on Kentucky and is extending federal unemployment benefits, despite the screw up in not changing the law to comply with federal guidelines by the Governor and the Legislature.
Stephanie Steizer of the Courier Journal desires an Attagirl for the terrific job she’s been doing following state unemployment issues that are dry, unsexy and un-blood spattered.  Getting money from the feds to extend benefits for unemployed workers is apparently so complicated that legislation necessary to get more money from the feds never got introduced in the 2009 General Assembly. As late as last week, Governor Beshear was saying that the lack of a law change wouldn’t prevent extended benefits being paid by the feds.
That turned out to be not quite the case. Governor Beshear relied on the state reaching 5% unemployment of laid off workers with insured companies which would automatically trigger the increased payments. Unfortunately, the state only got to 4.91%. Steitzer described the Governor as “surprised”. Read her story here.  Failure to act limits aid to jobless

Clinton City Council Approves Interlocal Agreement
Clinton City Council Approves Interlocal Agreement
As of April 1st, over 123,000 cubic yards of debris have been picked up in Hickman County alone and that represents a paltry 15% of the total to be moved. That means there is almost 700,000 cubic yards of debris still to be removed. Paying for removal on budgets stretched like piano wire is almost impossible for the small towns in the region.
On Tuesday evening, the local county judge got the nod from Clinton City Council on an interlocal agreement for cleanup.

With the Fancy Farm Picnic coming up on Saturday, it's a good time to revive this editorial.
...Jobs and industry sorely needed in this area are chivvied by state government to easy for them to reach places in the Golden Triangle.
Politicians declare their undying love for West Kentucky at the Fancy Farm Picnic, then pile back in their helicopters and tour buses, not to be seen again until the next election cycle.
We are Charlie Brown and the football, eternally hoping that this time will be different. Eternally left flat on our backs vowing that we won’t be fooled again...

Hebert Leaving WHAS
Hebert Leaving WHAS
I am not going to wax poetic over Mark Hebert's leaving journalism. But I, for one, will miss him. He is making a safe move to public affairs office at U of L. Regular hours. No ambulances. No disasters. No middle of the night emergencies (we hope). Just nosy reporters wanting just a bit more than his boss is going to want to reveal. Life will change for the better for Mr. Hebert. It won't change for the better for those of us wanting and needing unbiased journalism from a reporter who followed a story wherever it led.

Who in Hickman County do I talk to about my water bill?
Who in Hickman County do I talk to about my water bill?
Those having trouble with their water bills are urged to call the Public Service Commission at 1-800-772-4636 and lodge an informal complaint.
Angry citizens confronted Clinton City Council over high water and sewer bills at the regular April meeting. One woman said that her water was cut off in February, 2009. Her bill, which had been a steady $45 a month for ten years, suddenly ballooned to $180 a month. She fell behind, she told the Council and the water company would not take payments. The month her water was turned off, she received a bill for $600. The next month was $700. The bill she received on April 6th, the day of the Council meeting was a $1000.

Paducah Lowertown Featured in St. Louis Story
St. Louis Today  has a very nice story on Paducah’s Lowertown arts relocation project. Just in time for the Quilt Festival which starts April 22nd. The movement from quilting to other arts was brilliant and brought millions of dollars into the local economy. Houses that looked only fit for demolition or a rat colony were converted into homes and galleries.
What Paducah did right was to have a vision, get buy in from the banks, the arts and government.  The city of 27,000 now has a world class tourist attraction – and it all started with bits of cloth, needles and thread.

A Response from Utilities, Inc. President Re AIG Link
First of all I would like to thank you for the opportunity to respond. In an effort to fully explain the relationship between AIG and Highstar, and then the further relationship to Utilities, Inc. I would like to use an analogy. I am sure many of your readers have heard of FedEx Field in Maryland and understand the concept of naming rights. FedEx Field is where the Washington Redskins play their home football games. The ownership of the stadium is by Daniel Snyder/Redskins. FedEx has entered into a marketing agreement to have its name associated with the field. Prior to FedEx the name was Jack Kent Cooke Stadium. As everyone understands FedEx does not own the Washington Redskins stadium or the team. This is strictly a marketing arrangement. The same can be said about the former AIG Highstar name, it was naming rights, a marketing arrangement (that worked for both sides) and has no impact on ownership.
I truly hope this clarifies your understanding. If you have any further questions please feel free to contact my office, Larry Schumacher - President & C.E.O.

Change Comes to Little Clinton
There were obvious changes in this small town of 900 souls in the past week.

Circumstances beyond anyone's control - fire and wind - changed forever two town landmarks - Perkins Drugs and Second Baptist Church (see related story on Second Baptist).
Other happier changes are blooming like March flowers.
A new Habitat for Humanity House is under roof and a second is soon to come.
Harold Byassee Home Improvement is putting a new blue metal roof on the Hickman County Museum, damaged by the Great Ice Storm of 2009.
