What's the Matter With Kentucky?
In 2004, Thomas Frank wrote "What's the Matter With Kansas? How Conservative Populism Won the Heart of America." Maybe the 2008 version should be "What's the Matter With Kentucky?"

While states like Virginia, the Old Dominion, turned blue, Kentucky gave John McCain one of his few reasons to smile on Tuesday evening. At least one television network called Kentucky for McCain with 3% of the polls reporting.

What about the Dems?   If there is something went wrong, what can we do to fix it?

We have a year coming up with NO elections. Time to think. Time to plan.....

I want to hear from you. Email me at

We All Need This
We All Need This
A frog goes into a bank and approaches the teller. He can see from her nameplate that her name is Patricia Whack.

"Miss Whack, I'd like to get a $30,000 loan to take a holiday."

Patty looks at the frog in disbelief and asks his name. The frog says his name is Kermit Jagger, his dad is Mick Jagger, and that it's okay, he knows the bank manager.

Patty explains that he will need to secure the loan with some collateral.

The frog says, "Sure. I have this," and produces a tiny porcelain elephant, about an inch tall, bright pink and perfectly  formed.

Very confused, Patty explains that she'll have to consult with the bank manager and disappears into a back office.

She finds the manager and says, "There's a frog called Kermit Jagger out there who claims to know you and wants to borrow $30,000, and he wants to use this as collateral."

She holds up the tiny pink elephant. "I mean, what in the world is this?"
Folks, you really need this....

Thinking Time at WKJPI
While I'm powered down, skip over and hear Ivan's radio interview on WKMS which is apolitical. Despite the national wave for Democrats and Barack Obama, the Republicans did VERY WELL down here in the Purchase.  So...

Time to take a breath, crunch some numbers and do some thinking about how this happened, why this happened and what it will mean for the good citizens who voted for incumbents over challengers, statis over change.  Time to clean up the website, remove the "yard signs" and the political news that are so yesterday and generally get ready for the holidays, a short legislative session and a big, big inauguration in Washington.

The Right's "bias" charade
...The truth is that when John McCain says "jump," the media still ask, "How high?" Think about this: When was the last time McCain or his campaign has wanted the news media to focus on something, and they have refused? From "lipstick on a pig" to Bill Ayers, the media have scampered after whatever mud McCain has flung, like a puppy dog chasing a stick thrown by its master...

Risk Assessment of TVA Nuclear Energy
The greatest concern with nuclear power plants, however, is the possibility of a major accident...

...Charles Perrow, a sociologist, states that certain types of highly complex technological systems, such as nuclear power plants, are unmanageable by nature and therefore run the risk of a serious accident.  Accidents he calls “normal” in the sense that they are unavoidable.

Past as Prologue: Huddleston vs. McConnell
Today, former Senator Dee Huddleston is watching history repeated. The negative ads that were so new and shocking when run against him in the 80’s are now standard political operating procedure in races across America.  In an exclusive interview with Politicky.com, Dee Huddleston said that what was new and shocking won’t work. Huddleston in Politickerky.com

The story in PolitickerKy brought back memories of 1984.

GOP Poster - Barack Obama as a Terrorist

Over 500 Supporters Wait to See Clinton and Lunsford
Glenn Dexter, of Paducah, got in line early in the morning, 7:30 am, to be first in line Friday to see former President Bill Clinton and senatorial candidate Bruce Lunsford.  The doors opened at 10:00.  Dexter wasn't the only one to come early. The line to get in stretched the length of the Cherry Auditorium parking lot and beyond.

No, I am not ignoring the race for president
I know there is a national election going on! I realize that I am not covering it in depth like everyone else online. In my defense, I made a conscious choice to concentrate on our own little part of the world.  When the big regional paper ignores the river counties and the small county papers only cover what happens within their borders, well, there is a niche to be filled.

Read on for a summary of politics in the media down here...

Our Robo Message
Every major candidate is using robocalls. You know, those prerecorded personal messages that are either smarily on your side or going after the opponent like his jail furlough has expired.
This campaign tactic has got to be the most annoying thing to come out of A.G. Bell yelling at Watson to come here.
We couldn't persuade the candidates to quit. So we have preserved the sanctity of our castle with a little self help.

Here's our answer. We'd like to hear your opinion of robocalls-no matter who's making the call.

KET Explanation
A friend sent us the letter he received from KET that came out of his complaint about the 1st Congressional District Forum last Monday night.  It is interesting that in KET's eyes, it is Ryan's fault that they had to air the infomercial for Whitfield.  We disagree with Mr. Grey's interpretation of the words "equal opportunity".  Whitfield turned down his "equal opportunity" and turned it down for no good reason.
