Prejudice in the Voting Booth is Both Wrong and Dumb
Editor's Note: Al Cross reminded us this morning that his blog covered the Trumka speech in an article dated July 4th. Check it out
The Rural Blog

"A lot of them are good union people," Richard Trumka, AFL-CIO secretary-treasurer, told the United Steelworkers of America. "They just can't get past the idea that there's something wrong with voting for a black man."

It's as simple as crunching the numbers: Obama 98 is percent pro-labor; McCain is 16 percent.
MAYFIELD, Ky. – Some white folks still can't bring themselves to support Sen. Barack Obama for president because he is African American.

Health Survey News Not Good for Kentucky
Health Survey News Not Good for Kentucky
We’re fat. We don’t get enough exercise. We eat the wrong things. We smoke. We don’t see the doctor enough – and when we do, he tells 6 out of 100 of us that we’ve had a heart attack and have coronary disease. A “lucky few” will find out they have diabetes.

That’s the news from the Kentucky Health Department from its 2007 health survey of Kentuckians.

Scandal? What Scandal? Oh, the Bill Nighbert/Leonard Lawson Scandal
The Louisville Courier-Journal reported yesterday that Leonard Lawson and former Transportation Secretary Bill Nighbert (last seen working for Sen. David Williams) may have been very naughty indeed.

The Governor is responding quickly to the investigation into the Transportation Cabinet. Will the investigation turn out to be deeper and wider than reported in the Courier Journal? This one is turning out to be more fun than the Olympics - major league ratting out sessions ahead.

Stay tuned.

There you go again, Sen. McConnell
Whoever said truth is often the first casualty in political warfare must have had Sen. Mitch McConnell in mind.
His ad blaming Bruce Lunsford for contributing to high gasoline prices in Kentucky is “a big exaggeration.” Those aren’t my words. “Big exaggeration” is how the nonpartisan FactCheck.org Internet website characterizes the ad.

Campaigner Carroll Hubbard Back on the Stage at Fancy Farm
Campaigner Carroll Hubbard Back on the Stage at Fancy Farm
When the local candidates take the stage, visitors wander off for a barbecue sandwich or pack up and start the long trip back up the Parkway. That was not necessarily the case with Carroll Hubbard, who has been a US congressman and is well known across the Commonwealth.

When Carroll took the stage, more than a few stuck around. Some stayed to jeer and others to hear the man who has been a fixture in Kentucky politics longer than some of them have been alive.

Swallows Back to Capistrano: the Media Gathers at Fancy Farm
The media shows up at Fancy Farm every year bitchin' about the heat, the boring speeches, the elusive politicians and the lack of a good quote.  They come in shorts, billed caps and golf shirts, wandering the grounds looking for that something different that will get them the lead on Sunday morning.

Since we love the mainstream media most days and we do love them coming to Fancy Farm and spending their employers' money, here's a tribute to the reporters.
