...Whitfield was the only candidate who didn’t have to bother to appeal to voters for a job. He knows he’s a lock for re-election. He didn’t feel the need to tout his record. No sense in going into his legislative accomplishments over sixteen years of service in the US Congress.

Instead, he used his time to throw out the first pitch of red meat partisanship of the day.  President Obama and House Leader Nancy Pelosi were the beginning, middle and end of his speech...

The front page headline on St. John’s Picnic in the Sunday Paducah Sun was, predictably, about the man who wasn’t there. Republican candidate Dr. Rand Paul first confirmed he would be speaking then backed out a few days before the event. He visited the Picnic earlier in the day and attended a GOP lunch in Lone Oak. Paul supporters were at the Picnic in force, but spent much of their time frowning at what they heard.

Candidate Jack Conway took special note of his rival’s absence. Ninety percent of success is showing up, he said.

Senator Bob Leeper is once again defending his seat in a three way race. Four years ago, Leeper was challenged by Republican Neil Archer and Democrat Carroll Hubbard. He squeaked out a victory over second place finisher Hubbard.

This election, Leeper is challenged by Democrat Rex Smith and Republican Mike East.  Of the two hopefuls, only Smith appears to present a serious challenge.

...Challenger Mike Lawrence, the former McCracken County Circuit Clerk, joked that he didn’t like anyone to push his buttons – but he would be happy if voters push his button on election day.  Lawrence talked about his status as a veteran, telling the crowd that he had been to three veterans’ meeting in the past month or so. Rep. Rudy who serves on the House Committee that deals with veterans’ affairs was not.

McCracken County Clerk candidates provided the hottest fireworks at the end of the day. Incumbent Jeff Jerrell being challenged by two write in candidates. Becky Bowers was first to speak. She said that the current clerk works twenty hours a week for a $100K salary.
