State fighting back against post flood mosquito invasion

Last week, state officials began an aerial campaign to eradicate mosquitoes. This week, crews will start spraying larvae left in standing flood waters.

How bad did it get?

“In some places in Western Kentucky, an unprotected person could expect 20-plus bites a minute by mosquitoes,” according to Dr. Grayson Brown.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (May 20, 2011) – Gov. Steve Beshear today recognized the sacrifice of a Fort Campbell soldier who died while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

According to the Department of Defense, Cpl. Brandon M. Kirton, 25, of Centennial, Colo., died May 18 in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with small arms fire and mortar rounds. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Ky.
