Hickman County Elementary Student Questions Edwards
With a little help from her friends, Jade gets it done.
Jade Florence, a fifth grader at Hickman County Elementary School, came to Columbus with her history class to see her first presidential candidate up close and personal. She had a question to ask him.

Her hand went up among the first when the town hall meeting started.

Edwards took questions from the center of the crowd. Hands went up 360 degrees around him. He answered questions ranging from health care for a Kentucky woman with a pre-existing condition, keeping young people in rural areas and on the war in Iraq. He discussed job loss, telecommunication isolation, No Child Left Behind, physical education in the schools and the constitutionality of the Patriot Act.

Edwards fielded questions for over twenty five minutes. Jade's hand had been up the entire time. As she tired, her friends held up her arm for her. They were determined to help her get her question answered.

The next to the last question went to the little girl in the maroon skirt and beige top, her arm still being held high by three friends. And her question was:

"When you become president, what will you accomplish first?"

Edwards took stock of the little girl some eighty five feet from him, smiled and answered.

He said that he was going to cheat and give two answers. First, he would pass universal health care and if the war was still on in Iraq, he would stop the war.

Jade seemed satisfied with that answer as her friends cheered.
