Beshear and Mongiardo Revisit Themes in Paducah

Dr. Daniel Mongiardo told the crowd that when he is elected lieutenant governor he will sponsor a “hunt scramble”, rather than the traditional golf scramble. “I play golf once a year. I shoot a 69, and then I have to go to the back nine!”

Mongiardo, often in West Kentucky hunting, spoke of preserving the natural resources of the region. With Steve Beshear from Dawson Springs and his Eastern Kentucky roots, “rural Kentucky will be well-represented”.  Mongiardo told the crowd that while Louisville, Lexington and northern Kentucky are the economic engines of the state. When they do better, we all do better.  But rural areas must not be neglected.

Mongiardo wondered aloud why if Kentucky has two football teams (UK & UL) and we always expect their basketball teams to be in the top ten why we don’t expect “world class health care and world class education.” These two will be his goals. He then introduced his running mate who will be known as the hardest working lieutenant governor “until November 7th.”

Steve Beshear came to the stage on cue, the final speaker of the evening.  He reminded the crowd that he had been married for 38 years and “she decided to keep me.” His wife, Jane, who had joined him on stage, beamed at her husband.

Beshear told the crowd that If the other side wants to talk values, that’s fine. Democrats are “proud of their values.  It is immoral for 81,000 Kentucky children to go without health care. It’s immoral for seniors to choose between prescription medicine and food. That won’t happen under a Beshear administration.”

West Kentucky will have its first governor since Julian Carroll 28 years ago. It is time to pay attention to the region.  He joked that he says he is from West Kentucky until he meets someone from Hickman. Then he’s from midwestern Kentucky.

The good news in his big lead in the polls is “we like ‘em”. The bad news is - there are two weeks left in the campaign. He predicted a bruising campaign and warned supporters to be ready. But the campaign won’t take attacks lying down.

“For every dishonest attack, we will tell the truth about Ernie Fletcher”.

Next stop on the “Let’s Get Together” road trip - Somerset.
