Hickman County Sheriff request an increase in gas mileage reimbursement
By Gaye Bencini
Hickman County Sheriff John Turner came before the fiscal court Monday, Feb. 11, to request an increase in gas mileage reimbursement. Turner said that with the current price of gas, the county reimbursement of 30 cents a mile “won’t get it.”
Turner said he parked the deputy car, and it is not used unless absolutely necessary.
Turner said he understood that that the sheriff’s car upkeep was his responsibility, but he wasn’t breaking even on travel expenses.
Hickman County Judge/Executive Greg Pruitt said that if the pay were increased, using an example of 35 cents a mile, that the money would partly go back to the county since it’s costing the sheriff to buy the gas out of his fee account.
Magistrate Gary Jones said he thought mail carriers were getting 50 cents a mile. He said he’d like to see the county’s mileage raised to 40 cents a mile.
“He can’t make money, but at least he can break even,” Jones said, referring to the sheriff’s travel expenses.
Pruitt and Magistrate Tommy Roberts expressed concerns about a dime jump.
“Will it affect anybody using a vehicle for county business?” Roberts asked.
Pruitt said it would.
Turner said he could cut back on serving papers and that sometimes it takes 4-6 times to make contact with the person being served. He also has to pick up a juvenile in eastern Kentucky, citing another example of his travel expenses.
“We don’t burn more gas than we absolutely have to,” Turner said.
After further discussion, the court voted to increase county gas mileage reimbursement to 40 cents a mile effective Feb. 11.
Currin murder trial
The court discussed the Jessica Currin murder trial, which will be held in Hickman County March 3. The change of venue for the Mayfield case was due to pre-trial publicity.
The upstairs courtroom of the Hickman County Courthouse will be used for Hickman County court cases while the annex is being used for the Currin murder trial.
Other discussion
The county has over $351,000 in the general fund. Judge Pruitt said the citizens/employers have been very compliant in paying the payroll/net profit tax. Twelve letters have been mailed to those who have not complied. Pruitt said that while the $351,000 plus money looks good, the fiscal court had borrowed $100,000 from the Annex CD and that will have to be paid back.
The court approved the policies and procedures for mass evacuation at the detention center. Jailer Chad Frizzell said this was required by the state after the incidents with Hurricane Katrina and other disasters in other states.
The fiscal court passed a resolution for a Land and Water Conservation Fund 2008 Grant Application.
This will require a 50 percent match, which, if received, will come from the Hickman County Board of Education. This is for lighting at the girls’ softball field. The Hickman County Fiscal Court is the leasing agent.
The court went into closed session to discuss personnel.
After coming back into open session, no action was taken.
