MSU and KY State Universities Search for Entrepreneurs
MURRAY, Ky. Feb. 22 — Murray State University students will compete in a statewide business plan competition. The competition, called “Idea State U”, is hosted by the Kentucky Cabinet for Economics Development. The purpose of the competition is to find and reward the best young entrepreneurs in the state. Students from Kentucky’s public universities will be competing to see who can develop the best business plans and business concepts based on innovative products and services.

“I am pleased that Murray State University is planning to send four teams to Louisville in order to compete in the first statewide university student business plan and business concept competition. We are excited about the prospect of Murray State students competing in this entrepreneurial contest,” said Patrick Powell, director of the Innovation and Commercialization Center at MSU.

“The fact that we will be challenging students to participate in the formation of a business of their own or dream on paper about the kind of high-growth or high-tech business, which could put their business on top, is fantastic,” he continued. “This kind of competition is a great way to encourage innovative and creative ideas …”

All eight of Kentucky’s public universities are planning to send a combined 23 graduate and undergraduate teams to the competition on April 18-19 at the Kentucky International Convention Center in Louisville. More than $100,000 in combined prizes and awards will make the event one of the nation’s largest state-sponsored business plan competitions. In order to qualify for prizes or awards, teams must participate in all three events of the
competition, which include a written presentation, elevator pitch/tabletop exhibition and an oral presentation.

Prior to this state-level competition, only a few Kentucky public universities had programs focused on business plan development. Following the introduction of the state-level competition, schools without existing programs have developed plans for their own contest or are implementing a selection process to choose their teams.

According to Steve Dublin, senior lecturer in the MSU Department of Management, Marketing and Business Administration, Murray State has had a business plan development course for many years. In addition to that, the university also offers both entrepreneurial strategic growth and entrepreneurial consulting courses.

Dublin is the faculty contact for undergraduate teams at Murray State University. He can be contacted at (270) 809-6570 or steve.dublin@murraystate.edu for more information.
