Graves Middle wins another softball tourney, at Madisonville-North Hopkins

The Graves County Middle School softball team accepted the championship trophy after winning the Second Annual Madisonville-North Hopkins Middle School Tournament Saturday, Sept. 24. The Lady Eagles finished the tournament with a record of 4-0; shutting out three opponents and giving up only three runs in the four games.

Graves opened up with a win against Russellville Middle School by a score of 13-0, to give the Lady Eagles the No. 1 seed going into single-elimination bracket play.

Graves defeated Heath in the first bracket game 4-3 to advance to the semi-finals against Christian County. With the game scoreless going into the bottom of the fourth, with one out, the Lady Eagles' Macey Cox reached first on a single and stole second on a passed ball. Cox then advanced to third off Keely Barnes' ground out back to the pitcher. Sarah Watts stepped to the plate with two outs and scored Cox on an infield pop-up. One run and Graves' Hannah Ridolfi striking out 14 of the 19 batters faced, proved to be enough to capture the win for the Lady Eagles, 1-0 and to advance to the championship.

The Lady Eagles opened up the top of the first inning of championship play by putting three runs on the board. Graves' Lindsey Whitlock led off with a single up the middle and advanced on Dana Adkins' infield single. Hannah Ridolfi then hit a double to left center field, scoring Whitlock and Adkins.  Ridolfi stole third on next pitch to Cassidy Sheppard. Sheppard then grounded out, scoring Ridolfi for the final run of the inning. Graves' defense continued to be too much for Muhlenburg; in the bottom of the second inning, Muhlenburg's lead-off batter reached first on a fielding error. However, the next batter hit a deep fly ball to right center field that Graves' centerfielder Morghen Turley caught on the run and doubled up the runner at first to end Muhlenburg’s offensive threat.

In the top of the third, the Lady Eagles scored again when Bekah Courtney led off with a walk and pinch runner Morghen Turley scored off Dana Adkins' double to right field. The final run of the game came for Graves in the top of the fifth, with Macey Cox reaching base on a walk. She then scored off Bekah Courtney's extra base single up the middle. With great defense behind her, Hannah Ridolfi went the distance for Graves for the shut-out, giving up one hit and striking out six for the 5-0 championship victory.
