Columbus KY Post Office on list to close

Columbus Kentucky is poised to lose a familiar business in the center of the community if the US Post Office carries through with its plan to close the post office.

Columbus Post Office is on the chopping blockResidents who use the 42032 zip code or anyone interested in preserving the facility will have an opportunity to weigh in on Friday, October 14th at a public meeting at Columbus Baptist Church beginning at 4:30 and ending at 6:00 pm.

Those who cannot make it to the meeting can send comments to: Tim Reynolds, P. O. Box 31000, Louisville, KY 40231-1000.  Reynolds' phone number is 1- 606-439-0534. Comments will be received until November 30, 2011.

The USPS cites the cost of the facility and declining revenues as its' rationale for closing. In a two page signed by Christopher Carroll, advantages for closing include "the loss of a retail outlet and a post master position in the community." (No, we don't know who gets this advantage.) Other advantages include carrier delivery, savings for the customers who will no longer have to pay box rent at the Columbus Post Office, the savings will help the USPS keep services affordable, customers opting for carrier service will have 24 hour access to their mail and it will save time and energy for postal patrons who come to pick up mail.

Savings over ten years by closing Columbus Post Office will amount to $683,238 for the USPS. The post office does not promise that the current postal workers at Columbus will have jobs if the facility closes. The PMR (?) may be separated and the Postmaster "may" be moved to another facility.
