MISSISSIPPI RIVER JOURNAL LAUNCHES IN RIVER COUNTIES

The new paper is a cooperative undertaking by the Ballard Weekly, the Carlisle Weekly and West Kentucky Journal of Politics and Issues. Modeled on the upbeat, colorful style of USA Today, MissRiverJo will, in the words of Ballard Weekly editor, Anita Bugg, "strive to put its readers and our way of life to the forefront. For too many years, these small counties have been overlooked when it comes to government." Anita believes the growth potential of the River Counties, with their history and recreational areas are not being fulfilled. MissRiverJo will put the spotlight on the people and events in the area.

The Mississippi River Journal is a newspaper offering that will print twice each month. The paper is being mailed in Ballard, Carlisle, Hickman and Fulton Counties and will be available in restaurants, offices and other public venues. In addition to the hard copy edition, an online edition, www.missriverjo.com  offers additional content.

The first issue features Rozella Young of Carlisle County. Her sixty years of service to local high school basketball resulted in her being accepted into the Dawahare's/KHSAA Hall of Fame for keeping score at over 4500 basketball games. Other stories include a world traveler's visit to Barlow to get his motorcycle repaired, strawberries for eating and cooking, an essay on three famous men, bass tournaments, crossword puzzle and sudoko puzzles and on and on.

Three editors, Anita Bugg of Ballard Weekly, Michael Toon of the Carlisle Weekly and Ivan Potter of our own WKJPI are working hard together to make this paper a positive, offering that is honest with its audience. All is not well in the River Counties and few know the problems better than these three editors and they won't pull punches when a punch needs to be thrown. On the other hand, the River Counties are the best kept secrets in Kentucky for their quality of life and no one knows that better than these three editors.

Ivan is busy tending the new baby, so WKJPI will have to be a big sibling and live with a little "neglect" until MissRiverJo is less dependent on daddy. The baby has been a long time coming. This paper took about as long to gestate as a human baby. Now that she is finally here, we hope our readers will cross over and look at what is happening in far West Kentucky.

Pick up a paper copy or check it out online. The online version is lagging a bit behind the paper edition, but that will even out in the next few weeks/months.
