MSU Prof to represent US at Melbourne conference

MURRAY, Ky. — Dr. Sandy J. Miles of Murray State University’s Arthur J. Bauernfeind College of  Business has been selected to be one of the three United States representatives to attend the Plenary of ISO TC 260 in Melbourne, Australia Sept. 24-25.

Miles was one of the attendees of the first meeting of the ISO TC 260 (Technical Committee for establishing International Human Resources Management Standards) in Arlington, Va., Nov. 10-11, 2011, and represented the U. S. in the Human Governance Work Group in Paris, France in March.

More than 50 delegates from an array of countries will meet in Melbourne to continue the work in establishing human resource standards. Countries expecting to send delegates include Australia, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Pakistan, Norway, Sweden, Finland, the Netherlands and Israel.

Miles was elected by the U.S. team to represent U. S interests based on her contributions to the human resource management field and her work with the human governance group.

Miles, a member of the MSU faculty since 1991, received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and her M.B.A. and doctorate from the University of Southern Illinois-Carbondale.

She is certified as both a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) and a Global Professional in Human Resources (GPHR). Only four others in Kentucky hold the same designation.

Her research in recruiting, selection and training between American and German firms

resulted in two journal articles. She and colleague Dr. Glynn Mangold have had four articles published dealing with employee branding in which human resource management systems play a key role.

In the summer of 2011, she and Dr. Gerry Muuka had an article, “Employee Choice of Voice: A New Workplace Dynamic,” that dealt with organizations in the age of social media. Muuka is the associate dean of business at MSU.

Miles helped develop the human resources management program in the Bauernfeind College of Business that was audited in 2009 and endorsed by the Society for Human Resource Management for meeting curriculum guidelines. It was recertified in 2011 and was noted as having a strong curriculum in the MSU human resources degreed program.

She has also been active with the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). She served on Kentucky’s state council for 10 years and on SHRM’s Area II board of directors. Miles is past president of the Four Rivers chapter of SHRM and a member of the editorial review board for Business Horizons published by Indiana University. She is also on the advisory board for EIP Council, a nonprofit organization to promote ethical practices in the entertainment industry.

The human resource management courses she has taught include, staffing, compensation, human resource management and advanced topics in human resource management.
