Hickman County High students bring home wins from FBLA
Winners at FBLA

(Clinton KY) - Twenty two Hickman County High School students took home trophies from FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) Kentucky regional competition held Monday at Murray State University.

Of those 22, twelve took Hickman County High's newest college class - Introduction to Public Speaking.

Taught jointly by Dianne Owen and Jeanna Kimbell, the class is part of Falcon Academy, the no - cost college in high school program now in its third year at this small rural high school. Offered under the auspices of Murray State University, Speech has turned out to be popular with students.

Their teachers are thrilled to see them using what they are learning.

Take Billy Speed for example. He placed second in Regional Speech II. He will go on to state competition.

He is a junior at Hickman County High School having come to HCHS his ninth grade year.  He excels both in academics and athletes.  He is a pitcher and in-fielder in baseball and a point guard in basketball.

Of this student, Teacher/ Administrator Dianne Owen wrote, "Billy is enrolled in the Falcon Academy and has taken Introduction to Public Speaking where he did an excellent job and is presently taking YLN 290.

He is active in FBLA, FFA, and other clubs and activities.  He has volunteered as a coach for the Junior Pro Basketball League since his freshmen year in high school.

He and fellow speech student, Johanna Fuller, volunteered to visit all of the sixth grade classes last week and give them pointers on preparing for their 4-H and classroom speeches and they both did an outstanding job crediting their Introduction to Public Speaking class as one of the best classes they have taken in high school.  Billy will go to FBLA state competition with his second place win in the regional Speech II competition.  He is the son of Jeff and Christie Speed.

Billy did a great job in the speech class.  His confidence level grew each time he gave a speech.   I am very pleased that he placed in the regional competition.  The new Introduction to Speech class truly prepares students to give presentations and Mrs. Jeanna Kimbell, co-teacher of the speech class, and I are very proud of his placing second in the region in this competition.”
