Hickman County is no ordinary place. A century ago its western edge was kidnapped by the river, and sent to live with Missouri. Columbus was a Confederate stronghold yet it contributed an African American regiment to the Civil War and was the birthplace of Grant's career. During the nineteenth and early 20th century, Clinton was called the "Athens of the West" because it was home to not one but two superior institutes of higher education.
To mark its 21 years of celebrating Hickman County's rich history, the Hickman County Museum will spearhead a Heritage Week celebration in mid-September.

According to museum board member Laura Poole, the celebration is shaping up. "We have plans to turn this event into something that no one will want to miss. It will be a perfect opportunity for city and county to pull together to pay tribute to Hickman County's past."

The Hickman County Historical Society will be on board, according to Ivan Potter, president. "We'll be looking at who we are, and where we came from," he said. "For this celebration all the people who are responsible for this area's culture and heritage will be coming together: The Hickman County Museum, Historical Society, Memorial Library, and Arts Council."

"This town loves a good celebration," Poole added, "and I'm counting on the merchants to help us gain momentum. I invite businesses to decorate their windows, and artists, craftsmen and musicians alike to join with us to pay tribute to our rich culture and history."

Hickman County's Heritage Days will begin Tuesday, September 8th and will be topped off a 21st birthday party for the Hickman County Museum on Saturday, September 12.
