American Sign Language courses to be offered at MSU
The efforts of Nancy Strong and Max Williamson (shown on television via Skype) have helped develop American Sign Language courses which are offered at Murray State University

MURRAY, Ky. -- Murray State University's College of Education and Human Services (COEHS) is now offering courses in American Sign Language (ASL). The courses are primarily taught by deaf educators via Skype or an in-classroom setting.

Bringing ASL courses to Murray is largely due to the passion and initiative of Nancy Strong, an administrative assistant with the COEHS. Strong's passion is now being brought to the University with the assistance of Murray State educators such as Max Williamson.

Williamson has worked with Strong to develop sign language courses in accordance with ASL standards. While an interpreter program is not provided by the University, these new courses will transfer to other universities should students choose to further their ASL education. At Murray State, both first and second-level ASL courses are offered. A third-level ASL course will be offered for the first time during the fall 2016 semester. Pending enough student interest, a fourth-level course will be provided in the spring of 2017. Eventually, the third- and fourth-level courses may be offered online via video sessions.

Those interested in learning more about American Sign Language courses may contact Murray State University's College of Education and Human Services at 270-809-3817.
