Hickman County High celebrates I Love to Read Week
Wizardry Wednesday cast members in HCHS library

With February being Library Lovers' Month, it is the perfect time for Hickman County students to celebrate reading with I Love to Read Week.

The week-long celebration included a variety of activities related to reading promotion.

From dress-up days to a poetry contest, a week-long library scavenger hunt to a photo display, each literary-themed activity was a fun opportunity for students to not only celebrate reading, but also to earn the chance to win monetary prizes generously sponsored by the Hickman County Arts Council.

Poetry Contest

Students were challenged to create a found poem by using a black-out technique. Here, students take a copy of a random page of text and create a "found" poem by isolating certain words in a particular order to create a new idea or unique sentiment.

The top 20 entries were put on display in the library, and the entire student body was asked to vote for their favorite. Winners were 1st place Latosha Hurt, 2nd place Allison Pettit, 3rd place Brandi Hornback.

Dress-Up Days

Students were encouraged to dress-up each day to fit various literary themes. Each day, one student from both middle school and high school was drawn as a prize winner. Middle school winners were Caylee Ferguson, Gracie Lambert, and Cayla Hammock. High School winners were Montana Lyman, Marcus Land, Lexy Riddle, Emily Pickard, and Courtney Cagle.

On "Magical" Monday, students dressed like a fairy tale character.

On "Titan" Tuesday, they dressed like a character from Greek mythology.

On "Wizardry" Wednesday, students portrayed their favorite characters from Harry Potter.

On "Theater" Thursday, students came in costume as any character from a play, movie, or TV show.

Caught 'Read' Handed

Throughout the week, students were caught on camera reading for pleasure. Photos were to the Caught "Read"-Handed display board.

At the end of the week, one student from both middle school and high school was drawn as a prize winner. The middle school winner was Shawn Andrecht and the high school winner was Jeffory Powell.

Scavenger Hunt

Each day, a literary clue related to that day's theme was posted in the library which led students to find a hidden letter. At the end of the week, all four letters had to be unscrambled to complete a literary quote. All students who submitted the correct answers had the opportunity to earn a prize.

The middle school winner was Eli Armbruster and the high school winner was Hunter Leblanc.

I Love to Read Week will be celebrated at the elementary school Feb. 27-March 3.
