MADD Camp, a free arts camp for 5-9th graders, is back for 3rd year

(Clinton, KY) - Fifth through ninth graders will get a chance to work with professional actors, dancers, singers and artists this summer as a unique arts program begins its third year.

MADD Camp will run from 9-2 at Hickman County High School in Clinton from Monday June 19th to Friday June 23rd.

The acronym MADD stands for Music, Art, Dance, Drama, the offerings in the week long camp. In the first year of the program, students were offered music, art and dance. In 2016, with the assistance of Murray / Calloway County's Playhouse in the Park, drama was added to the mix.

This year, Playhouse in the Park is bringing a team to this small rural town in far western Kentucky to work with students. Playhouse in the Park Director Lisa Cope and her team will put students through paces in drama, dance and music. Local musician Shelly Lickliter will be helping students with the songs Playhouse brings. For art, students will design t-shirt logos to decorate their take them home shirts.

MADD Campers will share their week's activities at a luncheon program on Friday. Campers, families and supporters will gather at the elementary school cafeteria for lunch and a program. The luncheon is sponsored by the Arts Council. Volunteer luncheon chair Katie Beck will be ready for a big family turnout this year. Last year, the response was so positive and overwhelming that there was a scramble for silverware.

Playhouse in the Park came in 2016 for the first time. At the program, Lisa Cope told an audience of parents and well wishers that she and her team were impressed by the students' work ethic and willingness to pitch in. She offered to bring her crew back again, an offer that Hickman County was happy to take her up on.

MADD Camp is a joint effort of the Hickman County Arts Council, Flight, the afterschool/summer program at Hickman County Schools, the Hickman County UK Extension Center and Playhouse in the Park.

While there is no charge for the camp, pre-registration is recommended. Flight will supply a bus for students in that program. Transportation is available for other students. Breakfast and lunch is served Monday through Thursday. As noted above, a luncheon will be served by the Hickman County Arts Council on Friday.

Applications are attached or can be picked up at the Hickman County Extension Office, the Young Center in Clinton or by emailing marybpotter@bellsouth.net.
