Fancy Farm 2019: Top of the tickets bring contrasting styles
"Which side are you on?" Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin

Finding a picture of Governor Matt Bevin smiling at the Fancy Farm Picnic has proven to be an impossible task. The first term governor made his way his speech with the question "Which side are you on?" The choice is his way or socialism. He brought up sanctuary cities of which Kentucky has none, protecting the borders, funding the pension system, the unemployment rate, President Trump. He said that Democrats had been in charge for 96 years, ( a statement that would surprise former Republican Governor Ernie Fletcher.

Then he reverted to a tactic that worked for him in the past. He spent the last minute or so of his five minutes doing anything but talking about his record and his plans if re-elected. He asked the thousands in the hot crowded pavilion to join him in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. It was not unexpected (he did the same thing last year) and Democrats on the left side of the platform were ready. They stood respectfully and recited the Pledge as earnestly as the Governor.

For his part, Attorney General Andy Beshear wasn't angry. He took a quick victory lap for suing the Bevin Administration. For the rest of his five minutes, he spoke of finally getting the backlog of rape kits tested, of his support for teachers, his educator running mate, and his pledge to be governor for everyone "whichever side you're chanting on here today." He said that Bevin's speech showed he is creating an "us vs them" in Kentucky.

Rivals Governor Matt Bevin and Attorney General Andy Beshear didn't deliver knock out blows at the 2019 Fancy Farm Political Speaking. Neither made any easily exploited mistakes. That's always the greatest danger.

What they did was present vastly contrasting styles.

It will be up to the voters in November to decide "which side" they are on.
