Mary Potter

George, Dorothy, Mary, Ivan, Ginny Lane, Bill Potter, John and Stephanie

August 4, 1984 - the wedding party from left to right, Ivan's dad and mom, George and Dorothy Potter, John Barger, my son, the bride dressed like Scarlett O'Hara in her red cocktail dress, Ginny Lane, Bill Potter, and Ivan's daughter, Stephanie Potter.

Right below- Check out Ivan's waistline, all that black hair!  I look like an extra from the road production of "Hair".
We drank the champagne on the beach at sunset on the coast of South Carolina. Champaagn

I had just finished my first year of law school. Ivan was selling computers. We met when I borrowed a computer from him for a conference my last year teaching school. I was immediately smitten with him - he wasn't so sure he wanted to jump back into the fire of a relationship. It took a bit of persuading on my part!

We did all the cooking - Ivan carved a watermelon to look like a swan to fill with fruit. He was so pleased with his handiwork. I didn't tell him that the mess he made in the kitchen almost put paid to the wedding. We cooked, cleaned, baked and shopped for days. The wedding was in the back yard, under the old apple tree. Guests sat around the rose garden.  We had several hundred balloons launched. I cannot remember the reason we decided to do that. It must have seemed like a good idea at the time.

The poem below is by Virginia Chapin, published in "Beat of Wings" a 1935 volume. We found the first edition at a used book sale and loved the poem so much it was printed in our invitation and we read it to each other during the wedding. We still get a little sniffy when we read this.
