The 24 women of the Emerge Kentucky political candidate training program attended a full day of activities in Frankfort at the Capitol on Tuesday, March 16th.  The day began with meetings and shadowing female legislators.  The participants attended committee meetings and met with legislators in their offices. Representative Sannie Overly of Bourbon County, served as facilitator for the shadow day.  “The caliber of the women of Emerge Kentucky is outstanding and they will one day make terrific public servants,” said Representative Overly.

A surprise visit and encouragement by former Governor Martha Layne Collins was a treat for all.  Martha Layne Collins is Kentucky’s first and only female governor. She was followed by a meeting with Governor Steve Beshear.  Governor Beshear talked to the Emerge class about the importance of electing more women and bringing balance to Kentucky’s political landscape.

The Kentucky Commission on Women held their annual Women Remembered Portrait Unveiling and the Emerge class attended the ceremony in the Capitol Rotunda.  Women’s Network President Lillian Press was honored and spoke at the ceremony.

The day ended with a reception with legislators, board and class at the Governor’s Mansion.  Although First Lady Jane Beshear was not able to attend, she offered words of encouragement through a letter read by Board Chair, Jennifer Moore. 

First Lady Jane Beshear wrote that “Only through a concerted effort to train and elect women to represent our interests that we will begin to see real, positive change for our families and communities.  Steve (the Governor) and I are proud of the efforts of Emerge Kentucky and its founders and look forward to supporting you as you strive to better the lives of the citizens of Kentucky.”
