The Transportation Building - Big and Beautiful

While touring the capital city for the Inauguration, a "must see" is the new Transportation Building.  The word that first comes to mind is "monster". The building is so large that it can be seen from the Capitol Building.

We make no editorial comment here - except to say - go and see for yourself, West Kentuckians, and form your own conclusions.

The 420,000 square foot office building-a new home for the offices of the state Transportation Cabinet-is on ten acres on the north side of Mero Street in downtown Frankfort. Situated between High and St. Clair Streets. The building accommodates 1,325 employees.

The structure is six stories high and includes a cafeteria, which will be located across the front of the building. It will seat 340 people inside while also providing exterior café seating. The building will also contain a multipurpose auditorium with a capacity of 250.

Total project costs, including site preparation, road and infrastructure improvements in the area and a supporting utility plant is currently estimated at $115.2 million.

Funds for the building were authorized by the General Assembly's 1998 and 2000 budgets through Road Fund bonds. Also included in the project funding are funds budgeted in 1994 for the renovation of the State Office Building.
