McCracken County Clerk Candidates clash at Picnic

Clerk Jeff Jerrell is under attack for working hours/pay.

McCracken County Clerk candidates provided the hottest fireworks at the end of the day. Incumbent Jeff Jerrell being challenged by two write in candidates. Becky Bowers was first to speak. She said that the current clerk works twenty hours a week for a $100K salary.

Jerrell spoke only briefly, citing his work in a booth at the Picnic. He told the crowd that he has 28 years experience in the Clerk’s office.

A second write in candidate, Mark Kidd, told the crowd that Bill Bartleman of the Paducah Sun called him and told him that his yard signs had incorrect disclaimer signs. The candidate called Jerrell and asked if he had called the local paper. Jerrell denied any involvement and said that he too was the recipient of a call from the veteran Paducah Sun reporter.  The candidate said that it would take a magnifying glass to find his name in the Sun – and wondered why the story had not hit the paper. Later, Bartleman said the story would be in Monday’s edition.

Write in candidates seldom are successful, but word in McCracken is that Bowers has a shot to knock off the incumbent with a write in vote. Bowers was the only woman candidate to speak.
