The Graves County Middle School Lady Eagles won the Kentucky Middle School Double Elimination Softball State Tournament at Livingston Central High School the first weekend of October. Some 16 teams from across the commonwealth participated. The Lady Eagles won five games and remained undefeated throughout the tournament.

Graves County defeated these opponents by these scores: South Warren County Middle School 8-3, Muhlenburg County Middle School 1-0, Reidland Middle School 6-1, Union County Middle School 6-0, and Reidland Middle School 4-2. Reidland defeated Owensboro Catholic and Union County to advance to the championship game from the second bracket. Since that bracket included teams with a loss, Reidland would have been required to defeat Graves County twice to win the title since Graves County did not sustain a loss going into the championship game.

“The girls did a great job this year and we are so proud of their accomplishments,” said coach Selise Ridolfi. “We believe that other than Graves County High School’s Co-Ed Competition Cheerleaders’ multiple championships, this is the first state athletic championship in the Graves County Schools since the consolidation of the high school in 1985.”

Ridolfi added, “Thanks to the efforts of State Rep. Fred Nesler (D-Mayfield), Graves County school board member Kevin Curtsinger, and Regional Transportation planner Stacy Courtney, the Kentucky Hiighway Department will place signs in honor of Graves County Middle School’s state softball championship at the north entrance to the Middle School at the intersection of U.S. Highway 45 and Jimtown Road.”

Additionally, the softball Booster Club plans to purchase state championship tee-shirts for the players and others are welcome to place a tee-shirt order. Those interested are asked to make contact with Selise Ridolfi for more information at (270) 674- or 328-1558. The Middle School gymnasium and the team’s home field at Graves County High School also will display banners noting the achievement.
