Books, breakfasts, and adult readers converged on the Paducah's Clark Elementary School library on September 24 to encourage students to go Bananas for Books.
Banana for Books is a parent/child reading program designed to promote the benefits of parents reading with their children. At the event parents and other adult helpers meet with students to eat breakfast and read together. Each student receives a free book to take home. Bananas for Books is sponsored by the Clark Family Resource Center and Clark Title I.
"This year's event is nice because we have 20 Murray State University students reading to kids whose parents were unable to come," Family Resource Center director Robin Cook said.
The additional help allowed every student to come and read and pick out a book to take home, said Cook.
Lynn Minter, a senior elementary education major, said she had attended both days of Bananas for Books.
"It's been excellent seeing the kids excited about reading," said Minter. "We tell them they get to pick out a book and they just light up."
