Hazel Gets GOLD for Sewers

CALLOWAY COMMUNITY OF HAZEL AWARDED SEWER GRANT

FRANKFORT, KY (May 28, 2008) –  Gov. Steve Beshear, in conjunction with the Governor’s Office for Local Development (GOLD), has announced the approval of a $440,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) for waste water treatment plant improvements, sewer system testing and sewer collection system rehabilitation for the city of Hazel.

This grant, in addition to other state and federal funds, will cover the costs associated with various improvements to the wastewater treatment process, the re-rating of the lagoon, replacement of the influent lift station and the rehabilitation of approximately 3,500 linear feet of the sewer collection system.  The collection system and treatment facilities of the city of Hazel are owned, operated, and maintained by the South 641 Water District.  This grant will improve service to approximately 227 customers.

Kentucky’s U. S. Congressional leaders’ continued support of the CDBG program has made the funding available nationally as well as within the commonwealth.  The state’s CDBG program is managed by GOLD and funded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).  Approved grants are used to assist counties and cities in revitalizing neighborhoods, expanding affordable housing and economic opportunities, providing infrastructure and/or improving community facilities and services.
