Paducah Tilghman juniors Adrianna Matchem, Latonya Taylor, Kamari Turnley, and Rometta Washington have been selected by the McCracken County Community Career Endowment (MCCCE) to participate in the 2011 PaxtonScholars program.
These selected scholars will receive college scholarship funds based on grade-point averages during their junior and senior years of high school and through their first two semesters of college. A college suitable laptop computer will also be presented to all four scholars upon high school graduation in 2013.
Adrianna Matchem is a member of the student council. She also works at TJ Maxx. Adrianna plans to attend a four year college and major in nursing. Her parents are Agnes and Quinton Matchem.
Latonya Taylor attends Commonwealth Middle College. She is a member of the Film Club and Girl Scouts. She volunteered at 4 Rivers Community Kitchen for two years and currently volunteers at the Heartland Church ACTS house. She is a member of St. James Community Church. Her parents are Susan Taylor and Veronica Friar.
Kamari Turnley is a member of the pep band, marching band, and concert band. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Beta Club, Spanish Club, and FBLA. She works at Sears, and attends Washington Street Missionary Baptist Church. Kamari plans to attend the University of Kentucky with a pre-med major. Her parents are Arveta and Marcus Turnley.
Rometta Washington is a member of the PT Symphony orchestra and the pep band, marching band, and concert band. She is a member of the National Honor Society. She plans to attend a 4 year college and major in pre-med and music. Her parents are Tangela and Kenneth Washington.
The PaxtonScholars Program seeks to enhance student self-esteem, parent or guardian advocacy, peer and mentor interaction, maintenance and improvement of academic performance and preparation for college transition, all of which are unique challenges that African American students face.
MCCCE, a non-profit 501(c) (3) organization, was organized in 2006 after receiving a $1 million donor-directed endowment established at the Community Foundation of West Kentucky by the late Fred Paxton and his wife, Peggy Paxton. In addition to the PaxtonScholars Program, the endowment will continue to award scholarships and educational assistance to students who wish to continue their post-secondary educations.
