Dem primary candidate picks up labor endorsement

Kelly Whitaker, Democratic primary candidate for KY House of Representatives seat.

HICKORY, KY – In a sign of organizational strength and growing political momentum, Kelly Whitaker, candidate for state representative in the 2nd House District announced today that she has received the endorsement of the Western Kentucky AFL-CIO Area Council.  The 2nd House District includes Graves County and a portion of McCracken County.  The District’s current state representative, Fred Nesler is not seeking reelection.

Jeff Wiggins, President of the Western Kentucky AFL-CIO Area Council said, “As a wife and working mom herself, Kelly Whitaker will be a champion for working families. Mrs. Whitaker understands the hardship families have endured during these difficult economic times.  ”

Whitaker’s experience as a pharmacist also played a role in securing the Area Council’s endorsement.  Wiggins added, “As a pharmacist, Kelly’s knowledge and grasp of the complex issues relating to the rising cost of health care will serve the people of the Purchase and Kentucky well.”

Whitaker said, “We have the safest, best trained and most productive work force anywhere in the world.  All our workers need and deserve is a level playing field.  I am proud to have the support of the working men and women of the Jackson Purchase and I am committed to preserving the rights of every working man and woman, and ensuring that every worker – union and non-union – is treated fairly, with dignity and respect.”

Whitaker is facing former Mayfield Mayor, Arthur Byrn, who lost his reelection bid for mayor in 2010.  The winner of the Democratic Primary will square off in November against the winner of the Republican Primary between Patrick Fischer and Richard Heath.
