40 tons needed to close this hole

Caldwell County 902 about a mile west of US 641/KY 91 closed Tuesday when a sinkhole opened up on the road. KY DOT workers report a cave and underground springs near the area. Whether those are the cause of the giant hole remains unknown at this time.

The KYTC Caldwell County Highway Maintenance Crew placed special fabric across the sinkhole and dumped about 160 tons of rip rap into it. The fabric allows water to go through , but holds soil in place.

Engineers expect it will take another 40 tons or more of rock to fill the hole. Using a long-reach track hoe, the crew dug down about 35 feet. They then started backfilling the hole. Once it is filled, they will cap the area with soil and gravel. It is likely the crew will be at the site until dark, tonight. They will likely continue to work at the site on Wednesday.
