Graves boys' basketball team to play its Dec. 15 game at Wingo School gym to honor great team from 30 years ago

Paul Schaumburg, Community Relations Director, Graves County Schools

The Graves County High School boys' basketball team will celebrate a special part of its county history when it hosts the Hickman County Falcons on Monday, Dec. 15, at the Wingo Elementary School gym. It also is the former Wingo High School gym. The junior varsity and varsity doubleheader will begin at 6 p.m. and will mark the first time a varsity contest has been played at that venue since 1986.

During this, the 30th anniversary year of the consolidated Graves County High School, the Eagles will honor the players and coaching staff from the Wingo High School boys' basketball team from 1984-85 during halftime of the varsity competition. That team won the then-prestigious Paducah Tilghman Christmas Tournament that year, the final Third District Basketball Tournament before consolidation, finished as a regional semi-finalist, and was considered one of the most successful teams in Wingo High School history.

Tickets for the game will be $5 each, or $2 for season ticket holders, and there only will be 1,000 tickets sold for the event. Tickets may be purchased through the athletic office at Graves County High School or at Wingo Elementary School.
