Beshear and House Dems at Odds Over Energy Policy

Caleb Smith over at KY Wordsmith has an exclusive look at Governor Beshear and Floor Leader Rocky Adkins division over nuclear power in the energy bill. Beshear at odds with Dem lawmakers The Kentucky Senate added the language to the bill after the House passed it and Adkins is not pleased.

Beshear brought up lifting the ban on nuclear energy while in West Kentucky giving out Homeland Security checks. The idea is getting some positive play in McCracken County. Paducah senator Bob Leeper and First District Representative Steve Rudy filed legislation in the 08 session to lift the ban on nuclear power. If I recall correctly, it was the only bill that Rep. Rudy originated in this session.  Paducah, once known as “Atomic City” still has a gaseous diffusion plant but lost out to Portsmouth Ohio for a spent nuclear rod facility recently.

Eastern Kentucky Representative Rocky Adkins (D. Sandy Hook) has strong ties to the coal industry.  The coal industry can’t be particularly thrilled to see nuclear energy get a foothold in its traditional stronghold.
