Whooping Cranes Fly High Over West KY
For the past 8 years, Operation Migration has led endangered whooping crane juveniles to Florida for the winter.

This year the nearly 1,400 mile migration route was altered to avoid the Appalachian Mountains and, lucky for us, the new migration route flew over western Kentucky.

The Time is Right” for Ballard Circuit Clerk Faye Haney
Since 1981, Faye Haney has been a familiar face in the Ballard County Courthouse.  Anyone renewing their drivers license, paying a traffic fine or reporting for jury duty has been greeted by a smiling face and a helpful attitude.  In January of 2009, the helpful attitude and smiling faces will remain, however, the lady at the top will no longer hold the reins. Faye Haney will be attending to other important matters - her family.

Faye Haney is shown above with her staff of deputy clerks.  Pictured are:  front to back - Holly Dunker, Faye Haney, Shana Riepe, Ginger Thomas and Anna Case.  Haney’s retirement will become effective December 31st.  Circuit Judge Tim Langford will make

One Stop Website - Great for those who can use it
http://www.assistance.ky.gov.  This one-stop-shop provides readily accessible links for struggling Kentuckians to help find critical resources in tough times, such as health insurance and home mortgage information.

Editor's Note : I checked it out - pretty helpful links. Of course, I have broadband computer access which many struggling West Kentuckians lack.

How about  the state sending out a snail mail letter to recipients of state programs  with information on where to go to get access to computers and help using them?

Or maybe a public information television campaign? Or both?

Is the State Pitifully Broke or Not?
This past week’s stories in two major Kentucky papers taken together emphasize the tone deaf quality of our leaders in Frankfort. Spewing money out of one pocket while turning the other inside out to show taxpayers and President Elect Obama the pitifully poor state of the Commonwealth is an activity shared by both the executive and legislative branch.

That Darned Hole
UPDATE: We don’t know who fixed the cover. Had to be someone from the government (nobody I know keeps those cool red cones lying around).

Walking back from the courthouse this morning around ten, I noticed the cover was off the manhole that sits right in the middle of the sidewalk almost under our one- and- only- traffic light. A few weeks (months?) ago, someone tripped on this very same manhole and was hurt.

EKU and General Atomics Partner with Fed $$

Eastern Kentucky University and General Atomics, a firm out of California, will be working together to come up with a non-food biofuel. General Atomics, founded (when else?) in the 1950s, created the Predator drone used extensively by the military.  To move the deal, Rep. Ben Chandler came up with $4 million dollars in federal funds for the project.

More Nukes for Paduke?
Got an email today from the Cumberland Chapter of the Sierra Club. It looks like Paducah is on the list for a spent nuclear fuel reprocessing plant. Oh goody. More foulness for ground, air, water and living beings.    This sounds like a really bad idea.  There is an address to submit your opinion in the email. Do something unfood related this weekend - write to the Department of Energy.

Yowzah. Gov't Jobs Up, Factory Jobs Down

According to the seasonally adjusted employment data, the government sector, which includes public education, public administration agencies and state-owned hospitals, gained 2,700 positions between September 2008 and October 2008.

The sector has grown by 10,000 jobs since October 2007 with roughly half of those positions in local government.

Is It Time to Think the Unthinkable?
Incumbency seems to be the biggest predictor of success at the ballot box. In past elections, we calculated the chances of reelection at 91%. This year, the chances of re-election were even better. The percentage of incumbents went up this year. Two years ago, there were 65 unopposed House legislators. This year, there were 70 unopposed.

Senate Races Reinforce Status Quo
The major predictor of success at the polls?  Incumbency, incumbency, incumbency.

We put together a list of Kentucky Senate races across the state. Without exception, regardless of party, incumbents came out on top. While across America, "change" was the watchword, across Kentucky, it was business as usual.

Veterans Day - Tuesday, November 11th

Veterans' Day sprang from the horror of World War I, the "war to end all wars".  Men and women who serve the United States by putting on the uniform and going where they are sent, doing the job that needs doing, and coming home to a world unchanged - except for their lives turned upside down - deserve more than a Penney's white sale or a day to sleep in.

Veterans aren't red. They aren't blue. They are us. Honor them on this their day.
