EDITOR'S NOTE: A sharp eyed reader contacted me to let me know this is not accurate.

If it is a comfort to readers who followed this advice, I too registered my cell phone with the 800 number. So far, it's not growing hair or growling at me in the night. More to the point,  I'm not getting any weird phone calls as a result of the registration.
