Paducah City Schools: breaking ground physically and educationally

Here are many exciting things happening this year in the Paducah Public Schools!

A NEW SCHOOL: We are excited to share the news that we will be breaking ground for a brand new middle school within the next year! Our Paducah Middle School unites students in the "Tornado" spirit -- both in classroom and extracurricular activities. A new facility can only enhance their opportunities. Students take five academic subjects and up to eight exploratory subjects each year. Paducah Middle participates in the Gear Up career program and offers over 30 sports, arts, service and other extracurricular activities, including the award-winning academic team, regional champion MathCounts team and the state’s highly ranked Odyssey of the Mind team. The school has had several Governor’s Cup finalists as well as many state Duke TIP winners.

AP CURRICULUM/DUAL CREDIT Paducah Tilghman High School, home of the “Tilghman Tornado,” has been accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools for outstanding academics since 1913, making it one of the three oldest accredited schools in the state. The school continues to serve as the flagship of all high schools in our region. Paducah Tilghman offers honors-level courses in all basic subjects as well as 16 Advanced Placement courses on ONE campus, as well as foreign languages for the Commonwealth diploma. Seniors may also earn dual credit through classes at West Kentucky Community and Technical College.

TUITION REIMBURSEMENT An exciting new ‘Tilghman EDGE’ program reimburses the tuition for college courses taken during a student’s senior year. Junior honor students may also take American Studies, a two-hour course combining Advanced Placement U.S. History and AP Literature. This class spends a week in Washington, D.C. each year.

Orchestra Paducah Tilghman offers 35 academic, service and other extracurricular activities including award-winning art, band and choral programs, a Naval Junior ROTC, and even a student-operated bank to offer students a broad cultural experience. In addition to the award winning fine arts programs, Tilghman will begin offering a strings music program taught by Doug Van Fleet in the Fall of 2010.

FREE COLLEGE Beginning with the freshman class, every student can sign a 4-year contract committing to certain discipline, attendance and grade standards and earn two years FREE tuition at the local community college through the Community Scholarship Program.

The long tradition of athletic excellence continues at Tilghman with 17 sports offered, including the state champion dynasty of boys and girls track and field. The Tilghman Class of 2010 was awarded an unprecedented $3.5 million in scholarship offers, an indisputable testimony to their academic achievement.

FREE OPEN ENROLLMENT The district has continued the open-enrollment agreement with its neighboring district, McCracken County Public Schools. You are not required to reside within our city boundaries in order to attend Paducah Public Schools. We accept students who live outside our district within McCracken County at no extra tuition charge. Currently over 330 McCracken County students choose to attend our schools for a variety of reasons, including our excellent academic and extracurricular opportunities.

With 2,925 students, the district is mid-sized among the 174 districts in Kentucky. It is one of seven Kentucky districts working to close the achievement gap for minority students, which make up about 50 percent of the school population. More than 490 highly-trained and dedicated staff, including nine nationally-certified teachers, go to work each day with the same goal in mind: To help each student succeed and become a productive citizen.

Our school district takes pride in our curriculum, our staff and our students' achievement. Please take a moment to find out more about us by reviewing the enclosed materials and visiting our website at www.paducah.kyschools.us
