Coming for Fancy Farm Picnic? Take some time to explore the Jackson Purchase

Coming down to the farthest corner of the state for barbecue and bombast?

Why not get away from the madding crowd by visiting places unconnected to politics?

Here are a few suggestions:

Shopping

Antiquers – don’t miss the small towns. Hazel, just south of Murray is an antique Mecca. Mayfield, Cadiz and Paducah have their share of goodies to take home. And compared to other regions, the prices are attractive.

Is the play your thing?

Visit Grand Rivers’ Badgett Playhouse for pickin' and grinnin' (after lunch or dinner at Patti's.)

Catch “You Can’t Take It With You” at Purchase Players in Mayfield. Paducah.

Want to get away from it all?

Tour Columbus Belmont State Park – and see the cliff that’s falling into the Mississippi River.

Visit Land Between the Lakes.

Go back in time and see Reelfoot Lake just south of Fulton County in western Tennessee.

Bring your bike and peddle the back roads along the Great River Road.

Stroll along Paducah’s River Walk and be transported back in time by the many murals on the flood wall.

History and Science

The new Discovery Park of America offers a blend of science, history and fun. Located in Union City, Tennessee, it’s only a few miles south of Fulton, Kentucky.

Columbus-Belmont Park has a small but fine Civil War Museum. A new exhibit of artifacts related to Confederate raider John Hunt Morgan is now on display at the Museum. Hours are 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily . Price is $4.00 for adults and $3.00 for children. Group of ten or more: $2.00 per person.

Princeton features a restored antebellum home.

Murray State has the beautiful Pogue Library and Wrather West Museum.

We know we left something out – but that’s what God made google for!

Anyway, welcome to West Kentucky – there’s more here to see and do than attend one picnic.

Even if it is the World’s Largest.
