Oops. State Misses Out on Fed Unemployment Extended Benefits

UPDATE: The Obama Administration took pity on Kentucky and is extending federal unemployment benefits, despite the screw up in not changing the law to comply with federal guidelines by the Governor and the Legislature.

Stephanie Steizer of the Courier Journal desires an Attagirl for the terrific job she’s been doing following state unemployment issues that are dry, unsexy and un-blood spattered.  Getting money from the feds to extend benefits for unemployed workers is apparently so complicated that legislation necessary to get more money from the feds never got introduced in the 2009 General Assembly. As late as last week, Governor Beshear was saying that the lack of a law change wouldn’t prevent extended benefits being paid by the feds.

That turned out to be not quite the case. Governor Beshear relied on the state reaching 5% unemployment of laid off workers with insured companies which would automatically trigger the increase. Unfortunately, the state only got to 4.91%. Steitzer described the Governor as “surprised”. Read her story here.  Failure to act limits aid to jobless
