Paul's in the Senate race for sure
Rand Paul officially announced he is a candidate for the GOP nomination for the seat currently held by Jim Bunning.  Secretary of State Trey Grayson is the acknowledged frontrunner on the Republican side.
Paul describes himself as an "outsider" in politics. That's a similar characterization to his father, Ron Paul's, political career.
If he runs the same kind of campaign that Dad ran in presidential race in a smaller pond, there will be fireworks ahead on the GOP side of the ballot.

A break in the clouds for Mongiardo?
The Dan Mongiardo for Senate team seems to have gotten a break in their weather since last weekend’s slip of the tongue put opponent Jack Conway on the defensive for the first time since the two men announced their intentions of running for Sen. Jim Bunning’s seat in the US Congress.

The Democrats need an 11th Commandment
A pair of sentences in reporter Joseph Gerth’s Courier-Journal story about the Fancy Farm picnic jumped out at me:
-- “The two top Democratic candidates in next year's U.S. Senate race abandoned any pretense of civility…”
-- “The top two Republicans trained most of their fire on Democrats.”

Conway apologizes
Conway apologizes
Bluegrass Politics is reporting that Attorney General Jack Conway issued an apology today, saying:
“I apologize to picnic organizers, parishioners and guests that I got caught up in the fiery rhetoric that is a trademark of Fancy Farm and made a remark in reference to myself that I should not have,” he said in the statement. “When someone attacks my family with statements that are simply untrue, I am passionate in their defense and fight back, just as I am passionate and fight everyday for issues that are important to Kentucky families…”  the rest of the story
Good for Conway for apologizing. We don’t remember any attacks on his family – but we couldn’t hear what the hecklers were saying from the crowd either.

Dr. Dan Mongiardo - not the best, but not bad
Lt. Governor Dan Mongiardo went home from Fancy Farm weekend with some positives. He didn’t give the best speech at Fancy Farm, but he didn’t give the worst, either.

Best speech of the day – Rand Paul
Best speech of the day – Rand Paul
Whatever his political fate, Paul can congratulate himself on the best speech at Fancy Farm 2009. He told the crowd that both parties were guilty of hypocrisy, pointing out moral lapses by elected Republicans and tax avoidance issues of Democrats. Paul promised to introduce legislation to force every lawmaker to read bills before voting on them. At one point, he held the massive stimulus bill over his head to illustrate the point that no one read the bill before passing it.

Trey Grayson - partisan GOP politics 101
Trey Grayson - partisan GOP politics 101
Democrats who harbor the hope that Grayson will be a sort of Blue Dog Republican will be sorely mistaken. Grayson’s attack theme is clearly McConnellesque. There will be no bipartisanship in Senator Grayson's future - not if he wants to carry the mantle of his role model, Mitch McConnell. Anyone who thinks otherwise is fooling themselves.

Regarding Jack Conway and passion at the picnic
Regarding Jack Conway and passion at the picnic
It has been reported in other blogs and newspapers that Jack Conway’s quote of Wendell Ford’s SOB comment was offensive to some in attendance. Various news organizations, including a particularly gleeful account in the Paducah Sun, reported that locals were not happy that mouth-washing-out language was used in front of the St. Jerome Parish’s new priest and their beloved bishop emeritus.
While not shocked at four letter words or in this case a five letter word, (I would sell my television if I were), the venue was inappropriate. Conway owes an apology to the people of St. Jerome Parish.

An interview with Marshall County Judge Mike Miller
An interview with Marshall County Judge Mike Miller
I had a chance to interview Miller on Friday evening at the Marshall County Bean Soup Supper. Here's what he said about federal stimulus dollars and where they went:
"We were assuming that the stimulus funds were going to be used for what they call “shovel ready projects”. We have pipe on the ground. We’re ready to start laying water lines.  Then all of a sudden, we are using that money to balance the state budget. Now, you’re putting a patch on that thing. You’re not going to solve problems by using stimulus money to balance the budget.

Governor's plan: lure senators to exec for benefits
Governor's plan: lure senators to exec for benefits
Wow. Lowell Reese has taken three weeks to come up with a post on his blog, but the result is well worth the wait. His analysis of how Governor Steve Beshear is working to get a slots bill passed before the 2010 session is old time analytic journalism at its best. The answer? Turn a red chamber blue by luring away senators with juicy jobs and juicer retirement packages.
Reese documents how the Law of Unintended Consequences may weaken the Republican majority in the Kentucky Senate. It seems a little known law passed in 2005 under Governor Ernie Fletcher allows legislators with the time in to retire to work in government for three years and use their full time government salaries as their “high three” to calculate their retirement pay.

Adam Edelen - Governor's New Voice on SoEdBd

Not Edelman or Edelstein or Edelin, as some recently mispronounced and misspelled Adam Edelen’s name. Remember that name and that spelling. It’s attached to a 34 year old who, unless he does something stupid (which Kentucky politicians have been known to do), has a long career in public life ahead of him.

Al Cross to MC Fancy Farm Speechifying
Al Cross to MC Fancy Farm Speechifying
Former reporter Al Cross will be the emcee at the Fancy Farm Picnic next Saturday.  This is quite a change of gig for Cross who spent his journalistic first Saturdays in August sweating out a story from West Kentucky for the Courier Journal in Louisville.
Fortunately for Al, the hijinks of years past - marches, skits, drowning out the speaker with catcalls and chants - have been quieted somewhat by the increased presence of law enforcement in recent years.
Cross can be ringmaster where past emcees have been lion tamers.
